Jiangxia was named by Zhang et al. (1979). Its type is Jiangxia chaotoensis.
It was assigned to Mesonychinae by Zhang et al. (1979); and to Mesonychidae by Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Gingerich (1998).
