Taxonomy

Pachyacanthus was named by Brandt (1871). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Kazár (2010).

It was synonymized subjectively with Champsodelphis by Zittel (1894); it was synonymized subjectively with Priscodelphinus by Trouessart (1898).

It was assigned to Cetotheriinae by Brandt (1873); to Cetotherinae by Brandt (1874) and Brandt (1874); to Sirenia by Van Beneden (1875) and Woodward (1885); to Halicoridae by Trouessart (1904); to Cetotheriidae by Kellogg (1928); to Balaenopteridae by Abel (1919) and Pia and Sickenberg (1934); to Prototheriidae by Kretzoi (1941); to Platanistinae by Simpson (1945); to Odontoceti by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Delphinida by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001); and to Platanistidae by Pia (1937), Carroll (1988), Kazár (2010) and Gol'din et al.
