Peripolocetus was named by Kellogg (1931). Its type is Peripolocetus vexillifer. It was considered monophyletic by Marx and Fordyce (2015).
It was corrected as Periplocetus by Sepkoski (2002).
It was assigned to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); to Cetotheriidae by Simpson (1945), Barnes (1977), Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Whitmore and Barnes (2008); to Mysticeti by Kellogg (1931) and Uhen et al. (2008); and to Balaenidae by Marx and Fordyce (2015) and Berta (2017).
It was corrected as Periplocetus by Sepkoski (2002).
