Haplohippus was named by McGrew (1953). It is not extant. Its type is Haplohippus texanus.

It was assigned to Equidae by Carroll (1988) and Prothero and Schoch (1989); and to Hyracotheriinae by McGrew (1953) and MacFadden (1998).
