Taxonomy
Hyracotherium was named by Owen (1841) [type European H. leporinum; also said to be 1840]. It is not extant. Its type is Hyracotherium leporinum.
It was assigned to Artiodactyla by Owen (1848); to Equoidea by Prothero and Schoch (1989); to Hippomorpha by Froehlich (2002); to Hyracotheriinae by Cope (1881), MacFadden (1998) and Lucas and Kondrashov (2004); to Equidae by Owen (1841), Carroll (1988) and Rose et al. (2012); and to Palaeotheriidae by Hooker (1994), Hooker (1996), Hooker and Dashzeveg (2004) and Remy (2017).
