Taxonomy
Sthenodectes was named by Gregory (1912) [originally described as "a new genus or subgenus"]. Its type is Telmatherium incisivum.

It was assigned to Brontotheridae by Gregory (1912) and Carroll (1988); to Telmatheriinae by Osborn (1914) and Prothero and Schoch (1989); to Brontotheriini by Mihlbachler (2008); and to Brontotheriidae by Mader (2008).
