Proetus jamesoni was named by Reed (1914).

It was recombined as Decoroproetus jamesoni by Tripps (1980) and Romano and Owen (1993).

Synonyms
  • Proetus trefoilium was named by Begg (1951). Its type specimen is BG 11899 and is a 3D body fossil.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Decoroproetus jamesoni by Owens (1973).
  • Proetus vicinus was named by Reed (1940).

    It was replaced with Proetus (Eremiproetus) reedi by Pribyl (1947); it was synonymized subjectively with Decoroproetus jamesoni by Owens (1973).
  • Proetus (Eremiproetus) reedi was named by Pribyl (1947). Its type specimen is BM In37547, a cephalon/head (cranidium), and it is a 3D body fossil.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Decoroproetus jamesoni by Owens (1973).
