Taxonomy
Proetus pluteus was named by Whittington and Campbell (1967). Its type specimen is USNM 154457, a cephalon/head (cranidium and free cheek), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Baker Pond, which is in a Wenlock/Gorstian carbonate limestone in the Hardwood Mountain Formation of Maine.
