Taxonomy
Proetus pachydermatus was named by Barrett (1878). It is the type species of Pachyproetus.

It was recombined as Pachyproetus pachydermatus by Lutke (1990); it was recombined as Hedstroemia pachydermatus by Adrain (1997).
