Taxonomy
Alca antiqua was named by Gmelin (1789). It is extant. It is the type species of Synthliboramphus.

It was recombined as Synthliboramphus antiquum by Wetmore (1956); it was recombined as Synthliboramphus antiquus by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940), Miller and DeMay (1942), Guthrie (1992), del Hoyo et al. (2014), Clements et al. (2017) and Watanabe et al. (2020).
