Allalmeia was named by Rusconi (1946). Its type is Allalmeia atalaensis.

It was assigned to Oldfieldthomasiidae by Simpson et al. (1962) and Carroll (1988); and to Notoungulata by López (2010) and Lorente et al. (2014).
