Taxonomy
Phillipsia nitida was named by Holzapfel (1889). It is the type species of Proliobole.

It was recombined as Phillibole (Phillibole) nitida by Richter and Richter (1949); it was recombined as Archegonus (Phillibole) nitidus by Hahn (1966); it was recombined as Phillibole nitida by Osmólska (1973); it was recombined as Proliobole nitida by Archinal (1991) and Hahn et al. (2003).
