Proetus peroccidens was named by Hall and Whitfield (1877).

It was recombined as Griffithides peroccidens by Chilingar and Bissell (1957); it was recombined as Phillipsia peroccidens by Girty (1904) and Brezinski (2017).

D. K. Brezinski 2017Pygidium of moderate vaulting, 12 ribs, and 16 rings. Pygidial margin flat. Rings exhibit two longitudi- nal rows of tubercles that when viewed in profile give the axis a subtrapezoidal cross-section. Pleural fields strongly arched in transverse profile, thus accentuating the depth of the dorsal furrow and reducing the height of the axis.
