Phillibole aprathensis was named by Richter and Richter (1937). It is the type species of Phillibole, Phillibole (Phillibole).

It was recombined as Phillibole (Phillibole) aprathensis by Richter and Richter (1949); it was recombined as Archegonus (Phillibole) aprathensis by Osmólska (1968).
