Adianthus was named by Ameghino (1891). It is not extant. Its type is Adianthus bucatus. It is the type genus of Adianthinae.
It was assigned to Adiantidae by Ameghino (1894); to Adianthinae by Simpson and Minoprio (1949) and Cifelli and Soria (1983); and to Adianthidae by Cifelli (1983) and Carroll (1988).
