Taxonomy
Palaeopeltis was named by Ameghino (1895). It is not extant. Its type is Palaeopeltis inornatus. It is the type genus of Palaeopeltidae.

It was assigned to Glyptodontidae by Simpson (1948) and Chaffee (1952); and to Palaeopeltidae by Ameghino (1897), Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Perea et al. (2014).
