Taxonomy
Mylodon was named by Owen (1859) [named as a subgenus of Megalonyx by Owen 1840; raised to genus level]. It is not extant. Its type is Mylodon darwini. It is the type genus of Mylodontinae.

It was synonymized subjectively with Glossotherium by Simpson (1945), Hofstetter (1952) and Kurten and Anderson (1980).

It was assigned to Edentata by Leidy (1860); to Mylomorpha by Ameghino (1885) and Cope (1889); to Megatheriidae by Lydekker (1894) and Hay (1902); to Mylodontidae by Owen (1859) and Carroll (1988); to Mylodontinae by Hay (1930) and Gaudin (1995); and to Mylodontini by Boscaini et al. (2019).
