Taxonomy
Aceratherium megalodum was named by Cope (1873). It is the type species of Aphelops.

It was recombined as Aphelops megalodus by Cope (1873), Cope (1874), Hay (1902), Matthew (1932), Galbreath (1953), Prothero and Manning (1987), Prothero (1998) and Prothero (2005).
