Paramys atwateri was named by Loomis (1907).

It was recombined as Reithroparamys atwateri by Wood (1962); it was synonymized subjectively with Paramys excavatus by Guthrie (1971); it was recombined as Acritoparamys atwateri by Korth (1984) and Ivy (1990).
