Acratophorus was named by Kammerer and Ordoñez (2021). Its type is Acratophorus argentinensis. It is the type genus of Kannemeyeriidae. It was considered monophyletic by Kammerer and Ordoñez (2021).

It was assigned to Kannemeyeriidae by Kammerer and Ordoñez (2021).
