Arctomys vetus was named by Marsh (1871). Its type specimen is YPM VP10323 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Palaearctomys vetus by Matthew (1909) and Bryant (1945); it was recombined as Marmota vetus by Black (1963).
