"The epithet margaritae honors Margarita Gómez and Mateo Matamala, two biology students who died in 2011 as victims of the armed conflict while exploring field sites in Colombia."
Taxonomy
Piper margaritae was named by Martínez et al. (2015). It is not extant. Its type specimen is Museo de Historia Natural, Universidad de los Andes, ANDES-Paleo-001, a leaf. Its type locality is Locality 0502, Montecristo Ubaté Coal Mine, which is in a Maastrichtian terrestrial coal in the Guaduas Formation of Colombia.
