Phaethonides bellus was named by Cooper and Kindle (1936). Its type specimen is USNM 91790., a cephalon/head, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Warburgella bella by Lespérance (1968); it was recombined as Cyphoproetus bellus by Lespérance and Weissenberger (1998).
