Taxonomy
Hyaena abronia was named by Hendey (1974). Its type specimen is L 14186, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is 'E' Quarry, which is in a Pliocene cave sandstone in the Varswater Formation of South Africa.
It was recombined as Ikelohyaena abronia by Werdelin and Solunias (1991).
