Proetus (Clypoproetus) was named by Begg (1939) [Sepkoski's age data: O Ashg].

It was reranked as Clypoproetus by Sepkoski (2002); it was synonymized subjectively with Astroproetus by Whittington (1966) and Jell and Adrain (2002).

It was assigned to Proetus by Begg (1939); and to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002).
