Xunmenglong yingliangis

Reptilia - Compsognathidae

Taxonomy
Xunmenglong yingliangis was named by Xing et al. (2020) [Misspelled "Yumnenglong yingliangis" in second instance in paper.]. Its type specimen is YLSNHM-00005, a set of postcrania, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Fengning County [general], which is in a Hauterivian lacustrine siltstone in the Huajiying Formation of China. It is the type species of Xunmenglong.

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
L. Xing et al. 2020A non-paravian coelurosaur with an autapomorphic penultimate pedal phalanx on digit IV (IV-4) that is markedly longer than its immediate proximal neighbor (IV-3). Xunmenglong is also differentially diagnosed by the following unique combination of characters: sacral and proximal caudal centra dorsoventrally taller than (or as tall as) anteroposteriorly long; vertical neural spine of each proximal caudal vertebrae dorsoventrally taller than (or as tall as) associated anteroposterior centrum length; ilium, preacetabular portion as long as postacetabular counterpart; ilium, dorsal outline straight and anterior margin round in lateral view; tibia, markedly longer than predicted by an allometric trend among theropods (tibia/femur length ratio is 1.53); distal tarsals II, III, and IV ossified; pedal digit III (excluding ungual) subequal in length to metatarsal III. Precise comparisons of these values are provided in Table 1.
Although Xunmenglong is diagnosed broadly against non-paravian coelurosaurs to accommodate the instabilities of compsognathids, our phylogenetic analysis supports the taxon to be nested in the clade (result discussed in 4. Phylogenetic Analysis). Xunmenglong has two synapomorphies of the Compsognathidae as unambiguously identified in our analysis of the dataset from Choiniere et al. (2014): lacking supraacetabular crest (characters 439.0, 440.2) and fibular crest continuous from proximal articular surface (508.0). Xunmenglong also has two additional DELTRAN-optimized synapomorphies of the clade: gently curved ventral margin of anterior iliac blade (419.0) and poorly developed insertion of m. iliofibularis on fibula (517.0). The elements included in the character diagnosis of the Compsognathidae by Peyer (2006) and Dal Sasso and Maganuco (2011) are either missing or damaged in YLSNHM-00005.
