Orthis laurentina was named by Billings (1857) [Holotype by monotypy, GSC 2267b (pl. 2, figs 1-5), from "Junction Cliff, Anticosti Island" (Billings, 1962, p. 139). The only specimen from Billings' original material (collected by J. Richardson) matches the the illustration of Billings (1962) and Twenhofel (1928). GSC 2267b was catalogued by Bolton (1960) as a "hypotype" but should be treated as a holotype.]. Its type specimen is GSC 2267b, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Hesperorthis laurentina by Bolton (1981); it was recombined as Barbarorthis laurentina by Jin and Zhan (2008).
