Taxonomy
Daphoenus dodgei was named by Scott (1898). Its type specimen is PU 11422 and is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Whitehead Creek, which is in a Chadronian terrestrial horizon in the "Titanotherium Beds" Formation of Nebraska.

It was recombined as Daphoenocyon dodgei by Hough (1948), Clark and Beerbower (1967), Gustafson (1986) and Bryant (1993); it was recombined as Brachyrhynchocyon dodgei by Hunt (1996) and Hunt (1998).
