Calamodon simplex was named by Cope (1874) [genotype]. It is the type species of Calamodon.
It was recombined as Conicodon simplex by Cope (1894); it was recombined as Ectoganus simplex by Gazin (1936), Guthrie (1967) and Schankler (1980); it was synonymized subjectively with Ectoganus gliriformis by Schoch (1981), Schoch (1986), Lucas et al. (1998) and Lucas et al. (1998).
