Taxonomy
Protopharetra was named by Bornemann (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Atda-u Cm Boto-l]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Archaeocyathidae by Okulitch (1950); to Archaeocyathida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Archaeopharetridae by Debrenne et al. (2015).
