Taxonomy

Auchenia hesterna was named by Leidy (1873).

It was recombined as Holomeniscus hesternus by Cope (1884) and Cope (1893); it was recombined as Camelops hesternus by Hay (1902), Hay (1913), Elftman (1931), Webb (1965), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Honey et al. (1998), Morgan and Rinehart (2007), Baskin and Thomas (2015) and Carbot-Chanona et al. (2023).

Synonyms

Auchenia huerfanensis was named by Cragin (1892).

It was synonymized subjectively with Camelops kansanus by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Camelops huerfanensis by Hay (1913), Webb (1965), Slaughter (1966), Kurten and Anderson (1980) and Honey et al. (1998); it was synonymized subjectively with Camelops hesternus by Baskin and Thomas (2015).
Camelops aransas was named by Hay (1926). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Aransas River, near Sinton, which is in a Pleistocene terrestrial sandstone in Texas.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Webb (1965); it was synonymized subjectively with Camelops hesternus by Baskin and Thomas (2015).
Camelops traviswhitei was named by Mooser and Dalquest (1975). Its type specimen is FC642, a partial skull (damaged skull with conjoined lower jaws), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was synonymized subjectively with Camelops hesternus by Baskin and Thomas (2015).
Holomeniscus sulcatus was named by Cope (1893). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is head of Rock Creek, Mayfield Ranch, which is in an Irvingtonian terrestrial horizon in the Tule Formation of Texas.

It was recombined as Camelops sulcatus by Wortman (1898), Webb (1965), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Dalquest (1992) and Honey et al. (1998); it was synonymized subjectively with Camelops kansanus by Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Camelops huerfanensis by Hay (1913); it was synonymized subjectively with Camelops hesternus by Baskin and Thomas (2015).
