Cervus latifrons was named by Johnson (1874).

It was recombined as Alces latifrons by Dawkins (1887), Reynolds (1934), Kahlke (1956), Kahlke (1960), Kahlke (1965), Kahlke (1969), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Heintz and Poplin (1981) and Geraads (1983); it was recombined as Libralces latifrons by Azzaroli (1952) and Vislobokova (1986); it was recombined as Cervalces latifrons by Sher (1987), Azzaroli (1994) and Boeskorov (2005).
