Taxonomy
Chriacus inversus was named by Cope (1888). It is the type species of Pentacodon.

It was recombined as Pentacodon inversus by Scott (1892), Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Matthew (1937), Williamson and Lucas (1993) and Williamson (1996).
