Taxonomy
Metachriacus punitor was named by Simpson (1935) [genotype]. Its type locality is Gidley Quarry, which is in a Torrejonian terrestrial horizon in the Fort Union Formation of Montana.
It was synonymized subjectively with Chriacus orthogonius by Van Valen (1978), Taylor (1981), Winterfeld (1982) and Hartman (1986); it was recombined as Tricentes punitor by Rose (1981); it was recombined as Chriacus punitor by Archibald et al. (1987) and Scott et al. (2013).
