Taxonomy
Citellus matachicensis was named by Wilson (1949). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Matachic, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in Mexico.

It was recombined as Spermophilus matachicensis by Hemming (1956), Hall and Kelson (1959) and Shotwell (1968).
