Taxonomy
Claenodon was named by Scott (1892). Its type is Mioclaenus ferox.

It was synonymized subjectively with Arctocyon by Russell (1964), Schiebout (1974), Rigby (1980), Tsentas (1981), Archibald et al. (1987), Williamson and Lucas (1993), Williamson (1996) and Kondrashov and Lucas (2004); it was synonymized subjectively with Arctocyonides by Van Valen (1978).

It was assigned to Arctocyonidae by Scott (1892), Hay (1902), Hay (1930) and Halliday et al. (2017).
