Taxonomy
Desmatotherium kayi was named by Hough (1955). Its type locality is Hough Draw, which is in an Uintan terrestrial horizon in the Dell Beds Formation of Montana.

It was recombined as Colodon kayi by Radinsky (1963), Storer (1984), Wilson and Schiebout (1984), Schoch (1989) and Colbert and Schoch (1998).
