Aralia lobata was named by Knowlton (1924). Its type specimen is USNM 36675, a leaf, and it is an impression. It is the type species of Cucurbitaciphyllum.
It was recombined as Vitis lobata by Brown (1962); it was recombined as Cucurbitaciphyllum lobatum by Manchester (2014).
