Cosoryx teres was named by Cope (1874).

It was recombined as Dicrocerus teres by Cope (1875) and Cope (1875); it was recombined as Merycodus teres by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Palaeomeryx teres by Gidley (1907); it was recombined as Cranioceras teres by Frick (1937), Janis and Manning (1998), Prothero and Liter (2007), Prothero and Liter (2008) and May (2019).
