Semaeostomatida was named by Agassiz (1862). It is extant.

It was corrected as Semaeostomeae by Van Iten et al. (2014) and Pates et al. (2021).

It was assigned to Discomedusae by Van Iten et al. (2014); and to Scyphozoa by Sepkoski (2002) and Pates et al. (2021).
