Stichopterygium was named by Haeckel (1882) [5b. Tribe: Stichopilida. Open, triradiate Stichocyrtida. A. Stichopilida with wings (with three lateral appendages). IIA. Simply latticed. IIa. simpliciter clathrata. (Translated from Latin by E.M.R. and W.R.R.)]. It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Haeckel (1882).

It was assigned to Radiolaria by Haeckel (1882).
