Lithomitrella was named by Haeckel (1887) [A single transverse row of small circular pores on each joint. (Sometimes on the uppermost joints two or three rows.)]. It is extant. Its type is Eucyrtidium acephalum. It was considered monophyletic by Haeckel (1887).
