Spermophilus gunnisoni was named by Baird (1855) [also said to be 1858]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Cynomys gunnisoni by Baird (1858), Hollister (1916), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Hall (1981) and Goodwin (1995).
