Dicotyles hesperius was named by Marsh (1871).

It was recombined as Chaenohyus hesperius by Cope (1879); it was recombined as Tayassu hesperius by Hay (1902) and Colbert (1938); it was recombined as Cynorca hesperia by Woodburne (1969).
