Daphoenus felinus was named by Scott (1898).

It was synonymized subjectively with Daphoenus vetus by Scott and Jepsen (1936) and Hough (1948); it was synonymized subjectively with Daphoenocyon dodgei by Bryant (1993); it was synonymized subjectively with Brachyrhynchocyon dodgei by Hunt (1996).
