Taxonomy
Desmatolagus gazini was named by Burke (1936). Its type locality is Badland Creek, which is in an Orellan terrestrial horizon in the "Oreodon Beds" Formation of Nebraska.

It was recombined as Procaprolagus gazini by Storer (1984) and Korth and Hageman (1988).
