Taxonomy

Pantolestes secans was named by Cope (1881). Its type specimen is AMNH 4899, a set of teeth (left and right P4 - M3), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Trigonolestes secans by Matthew (1899) and Hay (1902); it was recombined as Diacodexis secans by Cope (1882), Sinclair (1914), Guthrie (1971), Krishtalka and Stucky (1985), Stucky (1998), Thewissen et al. (2001) and Theodor et al. (2007).

Diacodexis olseni was named by Sinclair (1914).

It was synonymized subjectively with Diacodexis secans by Guthrie (1971), Krishtalka and Stucky (1985), Krishtalka and Stucky (1986) and Theodor et al. (2007).
Mioclaenus brachystomus was named by Cope (1882). It is the type species of Trigonolestes.

It was recombined as Pantolestes brachystomus by Cope (1884); it was recombined as Trigonolestes brachystomus by Cope (1894), Matthew (1899) and Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Diacodexis chacensis by Sinclair (1914); it was synonymized subjectively with Diacodexis metsiacus by Gazin (1952), Guthrie (1967), Krishtalka and Stucky (1985) and Krishtalka and Stucky (1986); it was synonymized subjectively with Diacodexis secans by Theodor et al. (2007).
Phenacodus laticuneus was named by Cope (1882).

It was recombined as Diacodexis laticuneus by Cope (1883), Cope (1884) and Sinclair (1914); it was recombined as Hyopsodus laticuneus by Matthew (1899), Osborn (1902) and Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Diacodexis secans by Krishtalka and Stucky (1985) and Theodor et al. (2007).

L. Krishtalka and R. K. Stucky 1985	Larger than all penecontemporaneous species of Dia- codexis and more robust than D. gracilis, D. minutus and Artiodactyla sp. A and sp. B, with more inflated molar protocones, metaconids and hypoconids. Additionally, differs from D. gracilis in having a less re- duced and less medial paraconid on M1_3, and more nearly square M1_2; M1_3 talonids more shallow and cusps more bunodont than in Artiodactyla sp. A and sp. B and D. minutus; M1_3 metaconids less inflated in proportion to tooth size than in D. woltonensis; M 1_ 3 para- conids and paracristids more developed than in Artiodactyla sp. A and sp. B, paraconids and metaconids less elevated, entoconid lower than hypoconid and hypoconulid not lingually placed near entoconid.
