Dibelodon praecursor was named by Cope (1893).

It was recombined as Mammut praecursor by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Serridentinus praecursor by Osborn (1935); it was recombined as Serbelodon praecursor by Osborn (1936); it was recombined as Rhynchotherium praecursor by Kurten and Anderson (1980).
