Taxonomy

Dicotyles was named by Cuvier (1817) [genotype Dicotyles labiatus Cuvier, a synonym of Tayassu pecari]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Perchoerus (Dicotyles) by Marsh (1893); it was synonymized subjectively with Tayassu by Palmer (1897), Hay (1902), Miller (1912) and Wilson and Reeder (1993).

It was assigned to Suina by Gray (1825); to Artiodactyla by Owen (1848); to Pachydermata by Leidy (1860); to Suidae by Leidy (1873); to Perchoerus by Marsh (1893); and to Tayassuinae by Wright (1998).

Synonyms

Waldochoerus was named by Frailey and Campbell (2012). Its type is Waldochoerus bassleri.

It was synonymized subjectively with Dicotyles by Gasparini et al. (2021).

It was assigned to Tayassuinae by Frailey and Campbell (2012).
Dicotyles hesperius was named by Marsh (1871).

It was recombined as Chaenohyus hesperius by Cope (1879); it was recombined as Tayassu hesperius by Hay (1902) and Colbert (1938); it was recombined as Cynorca hesperia by Woodburne (1969); it was considered a nomen dubium by Prothero (2021).
