Deltatherium absarokae was named by Cope (1881). It is the type species of Didelphodus.

It was recombined as Didelphodus absarokae by Cope (1882), Scott (1892), Hay (1902), Matthew (1918), Hay (1930), McKenna (1960) and Van Valen (1966).
